Gate sculptures are an image of the portal modelled through the prism of the artist’s perception of outer space. They symbolize a transition from one world into another, our inner metamorphosis from one state of being into the next. Sculptures allude to sphinxes, mythical creatures thought of as guardians, that often flanked the entrances to temples in Ancient Egypt.

With her deeply personal experience of the Universe and interest in space exploration, Marina Fedorova’s Gate Guardians acquire new features. The image of Yuri Gagarin, being a symbol of an entire epoch, enhances an allegory of the opening, achievement, commencement of the new. The figure of a woman reminds us of the heroic female cosmonauts. Having wings, both figures symbolize movement, determination, and strength.
